When it comes to deciding between a manual and an electric garage door, frequency of use is always the deciding factor, with many believing that manual doors are better. They technically serve the same purpose.
One benefit of going with a manual door is the price. They are relatively simple to make. There is no motor, wiring, or anything near the garage that would require a power supply. A manual door is sufficient for a garage that is primarily used for storage, or only utilized a few times a week. The trade-off is that there is an inconvenience of having to get out of the car every time a garage door needs to be opened. This is especially problematic when the weather is inclement or if you need to carry shopping.
The problem with a manual door is eliminated by an electric door. However, the downside of an electric door is that there is an additional cost in the power supply to the garage, and there is the motor, which is a potential failure mechanism. Most electric doors are converted sectional or roller doors. So the door type you’d choose stays the same either way, it’s really the opening mechanism that changes.
The other factor is cost. The installation of an electric door is more expensive due to the wiring, and there is some maintenance that the manual version doesn’t need. However, the convenience of an electric door is worthwhile if the garage is used for the car rather than just storage.
This one doesn’t really have a right or wrong answer. Holiday homes and storage sheds really don’t need electricity. Most household garage spaces used daily to house one of the family vehicles probably do. Finally, if you need to decide based on what sounds better, think about what the garage is actually used for day to day versus which choice you think sounds better for impressions.
